Tim Howard
“The best part being a father is seeing my kids chase their dreams.”
Join Tim and his family as they venture from Memphis to Nashville, seeking out history and exploring the heart and soul of Music City.
Fuel for the Soul
Tim Howard is a pro both on the field and on the road. As goalkeeper for the U.S. Men’s National Soccer Team and a member of several top soccer clubs, he’s been to every corner of the globe. Now an NBC Premier League analyst and sporting director of the United Soccer League team Memphis 901 FC, he’s still fueled by the drive to travel and a love of the unknown.
“I’ve lived a nomadic existence. I love being on the road,” he says. “I don't really like to sit still. I love the unknown because it fascinates me, it excites me.”
Parenting didn’t stifle Tim’s sense of adventure. If anything, Tim’s two teenage children, Alivia, 14, and Jacob, 16, serve to fuel his drive to travel even more. “I've always loved traveling, and the fact that I can do it with my kids now is special to me,” Tim says. “I want to instill in them that free spirit, that independence, the desire to discover more of the world.”
Alivia, Jacob, and Tim excitedly chat as they cruise in their Land Rover Discovery on one of their signature family road trips, this one across the West Tennessee landscape from their home in Memphis to Nashville.
A key part of Howard Family travel is exploring local cuisine. “When we're on road trips, we look for all kinds of restaurants,” Tim says. “Sometimes it's a particular type of food and sometimes it's just about history or culture.
Crossing into Nashville, the family takes a break at the historic Loveless Cafe. Don’t be fooled by the “Loveless” name. The cafe is named for the owners, the Loveless Family, and each and every bite of the classic Southern dishes served here tastes like it’s made with love. The restaurant was founded in 1951 to feed hungry highway travellers and 70 years later, it’s still doing just that. The Howard trio gathers around one of the cafe’s outdoor picnic tables and dives into a plate of sweet and smoky pulled pork and the cafe’s famously fluffy biscuits.
Bellies full and back on the highway, the Howards fall into their typical road trip pattern: Jacob focused on playing car DJ while Alivia and Tim pass the time joking around. “The thing that I love most about my dad is having a good time laughing on road trips,” she says. “Sometimes I can't stop laughing.”
The family’s next stop is a step into yesteryear at the celebrated studio Welcome to 1979. Past meets present here as vintage gear is paired with modern recording techniques to create a truly unique sound. Eyes wide, Tim, Alivia, and Jacob stop just as they enter the impressive facility to soak it all in.
For budding musician Jacob, this stop is a chance to show off his skills. He cycles between pounding away on the drums and laying down vocal tracks “When I play music, I just feel free,” he says. Tim and Alivia look on and applaud, their pride in Jacob shining through as he sings. And thanks to the expert engineers at the studio, he’s able to leave with a vinyl record of his performance.

After watching his son perform, Tim reflects, “The best part being a father is seeing my kids chase their dreams.”
For Tim, family travel like this road trip fulfills his dreams. “This world is so big, and there's so many new places to discover,” he reflects. “To do that as a family creates a sense of wonder that we seek constantly.”
Known for its fluffy biscuits, tangy fruit preserves, and delicious country ham, the charming Loveless Cafe started as a home where Annie and Lon Loveless fed travelers at picnic tables. Decades later, the food and picnic tables remain the same, as does the homey feel, but the grounds have received some upgrades including a gift shop, a small market, and even a barbecue smokehouse.

With funky spots like Welcome to 1979, it’s no wonder Nashville is known as Music City, USA. Housed in a former record pressing plant, the vintage-inspired studio is actually newer than most of the city’s legendary haunts, but is not lacking for charm thanks to its old-school-meets-new-school melange of equipment. Visitors can record their own tunes and have their work set to vinyl or tape.

While there are countless places across town to catch live music, the Bluebird Cafe is the crown jewel of Nashville’s music scene because it focuses on the city’s specialty: the songwriter. While a superstar singer might drop in once in a while, the stage is usually given over to the talented people who write the songs that you know by heart. Most shows feature multiple songwriters performing “in the row” on stage, taking turns to perform their latest and greatest tunes. The result is an incredible, intimate experience where the audience is able to not just listen to, but connect with the rising stars of Nashville.
